FAQ

How can I prepare myself for a mechanic apprenticeship

It is essential to understand what you are getting into. You need to understand the mechanics of cars and how they work. You will be able to know exactly where to begin when you arrive at the garage for your first day.

You also need to know how to fix simple problems such as broken lights, tires, etc.

You will be able to diagnose and repair problems yourself.

To put the pieces back together, you will also need to understand how they fit together.

Finally, you should be able use tools safely.

All of these factors will allow you to become a skilled mechanic.

What kind of car mechanic jobs exists?

There are three major areas of employment that car mechanics work in:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people first think of becoming a mechanic. It's actually the easiest way to start. You have two options: work in an existing shop or open your own.

You will need to join a union if you want to work in a shop. Once you're accepted into the union, you'll receive training from the union.

After the training, you will be ready to go and start your job.

If you plan to open your own garage you will need to register with government. After you have registered, you will need to meet certain standards.

After you register, you will be granted a license for your garage to operate.

Your license will permit you to sell spares parts and perform minor repairs. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

As well as selling spare parts you will need to offer advice and direction to customers.

Dealership jobs

Many dealerships have mechanics who are experts in one particular area. For instance, they may only be qualified to fix brakes or change tires.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

These positions often require applicants to undergo specific training before being allowed to work. Employers are able to choose which candidates will best suit their position.

Some dealerships hire students straight out of college. These graduates already know the basics of mechanical engineering and therefore have no problem learning about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don’t have to be associated with any particular dealer. They are more focused on providing top-quality service.

Independent garages don't have to be associated with any particular company. This allows them to offer higher wages. As a result, these jobs are generally better paid than those at dealerships.

However, independent garages do not necessarily offer better workplaces. Many business owners prefer to own their businesses and not delegate the responsibility to others.

So you may find yourself working long hours without having any say over what happens during the day.

Expect to earn lower salaries than if you were working in a dealership.

There are many jobs that can be switched between. If you want to work at a dealership, then you simply need to ask your current employer if he would consider hiring you as a mechanic instead.

You could also apply directly to an owner of a garage if that's what you want.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. There are many other factors that can influence your earnings.

For example, the type of vehicle you repair and whether you charge extra for labor.

What qualifications are necessary to become a truck driver mechanic?

Although you don’t have formal qualifications, you have extensive experience with engines and trucks. Your expertise is invaluable because you know how quickly and efficiently to diagnose problems.

You also have an excellent knowledge of diesel technology which will help you to understand what parts are needed to repair our vehicles.

How To

How to be an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must be able to diagnose problems and make repairs quickly, safely, accurately, and efficiently.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands to American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. It varies depending on the location of the applicant. Some states require that candidates attend training courses, while others permit them to learn independently. Some states allow technicians to become licensed right away after receiving their license. While others wait until they have had at least six years of experience as an automotive technician.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Once hired, most new employees start out working as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs usually last three years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Because they have a good understanding of the job and what customers expect, many employers prefer to hire journeymen.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. When a candidate plans to open his/her own shop he/she should be ready to invest thousands of dollars in equipment.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. An individual with a high school diploma can earn about $21,000 per annum. Earnings for those with an associate's diploma are approximately $24,000/year. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
