How to become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. He/she repairs cars, trucks, motorbikes and snowmobiles for customers. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

An associate degree should be obtained from a vocational school if you wish to work as an auto technician. After completing the program, he/she must take the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certification exam. ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These locations can be found online, or by contacting your local car dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. The process will vary depending on where an applicant lives. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states require technicians to be licensed immediately upon receiving their license. Other states wait until they have been employed as automotive technicians for at least six month.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeships typically last three years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Some students are taught how to repair engines and replace transmission fluids. Schools offer classes during business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts.
