How long is an automotive mechanic apprenticeship

An automotive mechanic apprenticeship takes around three years to complete. This includes two years in school and two as an apprentice. The first year is used to learn all aspects of the trade including safety procedures and theory. You'll also learn how tools can be used safely and efficiently during this year. After the completion of the first year, you will spend another year on the job training. Here you'll gain valuable experience in different trades. These periods will also give you the chance to take formal courses.

The final year of the program is spent gaining qualifications and becoming certified in the field. These include NVQs, which are obtained after passing industry-specific exams. You can also get HNCs (Higher National Certificates), that cover subjects such as customer service, business administration, management, and business administration. Finally, there are City & Guilds certificates that are offered for those who wish to become qualified in certain trades.

To work as an automotive mechanic, do I need a degree? Can I study part time?

Although it's not mandatory, a degree can help. Employers will prefer candidates who have completed a degree. It shows that your efforts have been put in and you have succeeded.

What is the best career for an automotive mechanic?

Automotive is an exciting industry filled with opportunities for people who are committed to excellence. It is important to work hard and learn as much from others as you can in order to succeed in this industry.

How to become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Two sections make up the ASE certification examination. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These locations can be found online, or by contacting your local car dealer.

Before becoming an automotive technician, a candidate must pass the test. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states allow technicians to become licensed right away after receiving their license. While others wait until they have had at least six years of experience as an automotive technician.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. A student will learn to repair basic things like changing oil, adjusting brakes or replacing tires. They also learn how spark plugs are cleaned and inspect engine compartments. Some students will learn advanced repair techniques, such as changing shocks, installing air filters, and replacing engines. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. However, some schools offer evening classes if needed.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen typically spend four to five years learning how to install major systems, such as transmissions, differentials, steering gear, suspensions, and drive shafts. You will also learn how to repair complicated electrical components, as well as how to remanufacture engines and rebuild transmissions. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

A candidate who passes all the necessary exams and gets a license might be interested in opening his/her own business. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that this number would rise by 18% from 2009 to 2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. An average salary for a jobless individual is $20,000 per annum. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with a bachelor’s degree made about $27,000 annually. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. A common trend is for salary increases to occur so a professional making less than $30,000 can reasonably expect to be earning $40,000 or more within a few years.
