FAQ

What is the difference?

The two are similar but not identical. A mechanic repairs cars and an automotive technician performs maintenance.

A mechanic must have good manual dexterity and be able to perform simple tasks quickly. They should also be able correctly diagnose and repair any problems.

A technician in automotive is more technical than a mechanic. They should be able read blueprints and use tools like drills and wrenches.

They should be able safely to perform complex procedures. They must be familiar with all types of electrical and engine systems.

They must also be able comprehend how the various parts interrelate with one another.

A mechanic typically earns less than an automotive technician. But there are many opportunities for both jobs.

What length of an automotive course is it?

A course in automotive lasts three years.

The first year is spent on theory, learning all about cars. The second year is dedicated towards practical training. This includes learning how to drive, fix engine problems, and doing other maintenance jobs around your car. The last year of your training is spent on practical training, where you learn how to fix real-world problems.

How do I fix my car for a hobby?

It's a great hobby to take on if you are passionate about cars. You could learn how to repair them, buy parts for them, sell them or just enjoy them. It would make a great pastime if you're looking for something different to do.

It isn't easy to turn it into a full time job. It requires hard work and dedication. It requires a lot investment.

You may not be able to have an emotional connection with cars unless there is a valid reason.

How To

How to become an automotive technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she repairs cars, trucks, motorbikes and snowmobiles for customers. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing this program, he/she must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Two sections make up the ASE certification examination. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

A candidate must pass the state exam after passing the test to become an automotive technician. This process can vary depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. In addition, some states license technicians immediately after they receive their license, while others wait until they have completed at least six months of employment as an automotive technician.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs usually last three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students will learn advanced repair techniques, such as changing shocks, installing air filters, and replacing engines. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

When a student has completed his/her apprenticeship, they become a journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Many employers prefer hiring journeymen because they know the job well and understand what the customer expects.

A candidate who passes all the necessary exams and gets a license might be interested in opening his/her own business. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 1.7 million automotive mechanic jobs were available in 2010. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

Automotive technicians' salaries depend on many factors such as the employer, whereabouts, education level and experience. On average, a jobless person could expect to earn $20,000 annually. A person with only a high-school diploma could make around $21,000 annually. Associate's degrees earn approximately $24,000 per annum. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salaries are increasing so that a professional earning less than $30,000 could expect to make $40,000 in a few years.
