How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she works at car dealerships, auto shops, garages, service centers, etc. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing this program, he/she must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands to American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. The first section tests for mechanical knowledge, the second for practical skills. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These locations can be found online or at your local auto dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require that candidates attend training courses, while others permit them to learn independently. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

To get started as an automotive technician, a person should apply to a local automotive dealership. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs last about three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

After completing an apprenticeship, a student becomes a journeyman. Journeymen typically spend four to five years learning how to install major systems, such as transmissions, differentials, steering gear, suspensions, and drive shafts. They learn how to do complex repairs such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissives, and troubleshooting electronic components. Many employers prefer to hire Journeymen because they understand the job well.

Once a candidate passes the required exams and is granted a license, they might consider opening their own shop. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were almost 1.7 million available jobs in the automotive mechanic field in 2010. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that this number would rise by 18% from 2009 to 2020. When a candidate plans to open his/her own shop he/she should be ready to invest thousands of dollars in equipment.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. An individual with a high school diploma can earn about $21,000 per annum. An associate's degree earns approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with a bachelor's degree earn about $27,000 per annum. Master's degree holders make around $32,000 annually. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
